I need some ideas. It's a real sore spot with me that I can't find my 2nd great grandfather Evans. Family legend has always been that his name was David or Dave Evans. The death cert of one child names him W. D. Evans. The story is that he joined the Confederacy and died of measles while still in a training camp. I've always had my doubts, knowing how unreliable family stories can be. But in this case it appears to be at least partially true.

My father recently passed and in his personal papers I found some writings by his Aunt Mary, in which she says - "Papa's father joined the Confederate army in 1862 - went to camp and contracted pneumonia then died at camp. Papa's mother (don't know her maiden name) later married a man by the name of Strickland and they had two girls, Mattie and Mallie."

Well, I know her maiden name. It was.... Strickland! Moriah (aka Myra) Strickland married her first cousin, Enoch years after David(?) died. Anyway, Myra and David had 3 children born abt Dec 1857, Nov 1859, and May 1862. They all believed they were born in Whitfield County, GA. I can't find this family anywhere in the 1860 US Census. Dave (born c. 1829, although we don't really know) was dead by 1870 and the Census has Myra living alone with her children in Whitfield Co.

What are the best sources for information regarding soldiers who died of disease shortly after entering service? Does anybody know the names and whereabouts of Confederate camps near Whitfield, GA? I have access to Fold 3, but there were lots of Evans' in Georgia. Do you think a trip to Whitfield Co. historical society would be beneficial or would my time be better spent at the historical library in Atlanta?

Any advice for me? I would appreciate your input!

LOL! You snagged that off my tree or else one of my relatives. Yes, that's Myra. Her second husband and cousin, Enoch, was her next door neighbor when she was a young girl. Perhaps that's why you almost see a hint of a smile.

I've never been able to definitively say that I've found David (?) in any census. 30 years isn't much history to work with.

WILLIAM JACKSON EVANS

Mary Elizabeth Evans
1862 – 1914
Now that was definitely off my tree. No one had the photo of Papa Will and Nannie but me. They are my grandfather's parents. His hair was just that dark when he died. The photo above is Uncle Pink's family. His wife was a Ragain. She was the aunt to Nannie Evans, below, my father's grandmother. The Ragains were Confederates and had to flee Blount Co, Tennessee under threat to their lives.

- Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865

David L. Evans, residence, Habersham County. Private, Company K 24th Georgia.

* Hospitalized 6/30/1862 Chimborazo Hospl, Richmond, VA (With fever)
* Returned 9/3/1862 (place not stated)

No record of his death, but American Civil War Research Database say's he didn't survive the war. They list 5 David Evans, Confederate, from Georgia. This is the only one not surviving the war.

Thank you. ET. I will look into Habersham County. I'm not sure where that is. I appreciate your help. I really need your expertise on a related matter. I'll get my documents saved out and post them so we can talk.
