I got this out of my grandpas house after he passed so I couldn't get the story on it. Did confederate veterans use these at there funerals?

Nice Piece, Sorry you could not get the info from your Grandfather. From my years of collecting UCV items most coffin flags that I have seen is a one flag, flag, if that makes sense. It appears to be a 2 flags cut and sewn together and screen printed. All of the UCV coffin flags I have seen have sewn stars and bars.

Yeah that makes sense. The stitching looks old and was definitely done with a sewing machine. One lady said it was done with a foot pedaled sewing machine and not a electric.

With all due respect, it looks more like a rug than a casket flag.

My opinion? No, Confederate Veterans and their families did not line caskets with the CBF.

That would have been near sacrilegious when the men who fought the war began to die in large numbers.

Is it screen printed? If so, I'm going to guess that it's part of a bolt of fabric, continuously printed with one battle flag after another, so that they could then be cut apart, hemmed, and sold. In other words, I think it might be a remnant from a manufacturer of flags.

A casket flag is one that is draped over the casket and presented later to a spouse or relative after the service, they are not laid in the casket or coffin. Most Confederate veterans had a flag draped on their coffin when they passed, as was military tradition, of course this was allowed years after the war. Right after the war, nothing with Confederate association was allowed to be displayed in public, this was to include rank, buttons and state insignia.
