As I understand, on July 3rd, 1863, Cushing's Battery was at the angle facing Picket's Charge, Cushing is wounded twice and receive's a third mortal wound while firing the last round from his battery. All other cannoners in the battery had been killed or wounded, except one, when Cushing fired this last shot. The battery's First Sergeant had not been injured in anyway, and upon the fatal shot to Cushing this First Sergeant retreive Cushing's body, dragging it to the rear, to insure that Pickets men or other southern Soldiers did not get to it. For this, as the story goes, the First Sergeant received the Metal of Honor.
Can anyone out there confirm the truth of this story, did the First Sergeant in-fact retrieve the body and receive the MoH for this action? What is the sergeant's name?
