Culps Hill Trails at Gettysburg?

I've been looking for any trails that would ascend Culps Hill from
East Confederate Ave. That would be the route that charging Confederates would have taken. It seems to me it would be in the public interest to have at least one trail that would demonstrate the slope and distance that was required to capture that hill. Does anyone know of any or have you walked along them?

None that I can think of, off the top of my head. I'd have to look at a map to be certain though.

There's a trail marked by cloth strips around the trees. Enter it near the bridge. Go up on the little plateau and you may be able to see the opening.

...or you can bushwack just like the Confederates did;)

I cannot emphasize enough how enjoyable it is to explore this area. Even if one was only nominally interested in battles, the biodiversity alone is worth exploring Culp's Hill.

Well, I don't know of any, at least "formal" trails. If I were to ascend Culp's Hill, first I would do it in late fall or early spring, because those woods are a tangle. Secondly, there are a couple ways I would go, based on past forays into the woods off East Confederate looking for spots on the Elliott map of burials, but none of the ways I can think of are anything more than maybe deer trails. There are shorts paths around for places in the woods (like the Forbes Rock, for example, or down to the 61st OH flank marker from the top of the hill) but nothing formal.

I checked Google Earth to see if any paths through the woods showed up, but there doesn't look like any. I did however notice some things like how long the stone fence line is from Geary Avenue up the side of Pardee Field, over the hill, and technically all the way to Rock Creek (with East Confederate Avenue cutting through it). Totally useless info, but hey, most of what I know about the battlefield means something only to me.

There's a bridge? I'm not following you here.

Thanks, pam....and I have walked along the fence that you mentioned. It definitely figured into the battle.

I am currently reading Pfantz's book on Culp's Hill and Cemetery Hill, so I want to walk around there and do my in-depth study thing.

I used both Pfanz books: The Second Day and Culp's Hill & Cemetery Hill. Started with Stephen Sears as an intro. Looking back, I probably overwhelmed myself with too much information, so I need to go back and review.

The trailhead is near the Greene Bronze statue. As you approach the summit of the hill, off of Slocum Avenue, you will approach the observation tower. Wrap your car around the circle and the trailhead is at your two o'clock. The trailhead is marked with a wooden post and with a brown rectangular sign attached to it depicting a hiker.

That trail takes you further down Slocum Avenue and comes out behind the 1st Maryland Eastern Shore monument on Slocum.

I'll have to drive it and look. I don't recall any bridges on E.Con.Ave. and I know it doesn't cross any water.

I have walked along that trail. It follows the crest of the Union lines. As I asked in my original post, I am looking for a path that would come by way of E. Confederate Ave or Rock Creek and would follow the path of the Confederate charge up the hill.

Yes, it's easy to get overwhelmed. My secret? Every step of the way, as I read those books, I had one of Phil Laino's maps in front of me. There is no way that I could otherwise follow all those descriptions. I'm a visual learner! Also, it helped that I actually walked over all the areas described.

I believe that is the only one from that location.

There's a bridge on East Confederate Avenue just north of where it comes abeam Culp's Hill, just before the Jones' Brigade marker. If you look toward Culp's Hill, you'll see a raised area of flat ground, forming a plateau. You go up there, and you should be able to find the start of the trail along the tree line.

Great! Do you know if it goes all the way to the top?
