The Confederate ram Atlanta after it's capture on the James River - 1863.

On the outside, anyway; her finish inside was very rough, according to reports after her capture in Wassaw Sound. I don't know that she was refitted to be a bit more habitable in Union service, but I suspect she was.

I think that she and the Albermarle were very similar in design.
In concept yes ,in design no. The Atlanta was constructed to the plan of Clarke and Ivens small Mississippi adapted to fit the hull of a merchant steamer( see my earlier thread on he ironclads of Nelson and Asa Tift.
The Albemarle was a John L Porter diamond hull design.

Thanks for posting................... Does anyone know the purpose of the structure in the background ?

Nice pic. Just read the Wikipedia entry. I didn't know it was later deployed in the Union blockade. Thanks for sharing.
