Hello, CivilWarTalk.

I stumbled across this site as a consequence of studying the history & philosophy of the War Between the States. My training is in Mathematics, but History has begun to consume my spare time due to my newly discovered Southern pride/heritage.

One of the questions that has been burning in my mind, that I cannot seem to find a solid answer to, is this: Did the CSA accurately represent the views and feelings of the common Southerner, or was it merely a vehicle by which the Southern elite could effect their special interest agenda(s)? (Or is that a false dichotomy?)

How this question is answered matters a great deal to me. Unfortunately, most of the scholarly material on these topics seems to focus on political and legal analysis, instead of cultural analysis.

I welcome neo-greys' and neo-blues' responses.

P.S.
I did not come up with the term "Southern Lion." A self-described Yankee on YouTube, whom I was debating at the time, labeled me thus, and I decided to claim it. :)
