My interest has been piqued too. The solider on the gravestone in the picture served
in the 15th Virginia Infantry and the Detective Corps according to Find A Grave.
Perhaps this subject matter needs some investigation work. (pun intended)
It seems that after being conscripted, he was assigned as a "detective" to the provost marshal in the Richmond, VA prisons (Eastern District Military Prisons ?) :

Capt. MACCUBBIN, chief of the detective corps, was assigned the duty of penetrating the mysteries of the case, and threading the details through the labyrinths of rumor to their head and source.
