This jacket was worn by Captain William Herbert Withington, 1st Michigan Three Month Volunteer Infantry Regiment, at the First Battle of Bull Ran (he was captured not killed as the teligram on the cover of the book says). I am sorry the display case glass distorts the image.

It appears to be a high quality nine button jacket, almost certainly made up in Detroit. My question is about the three half-moon shaped pockets (one is on the left skirt).

Were these arch curvation style pockets common on Civil War jackets? Is there a name for these half-moon shaped pockets? Also note the sleeve cuffs are rather tightly cut while the elbows are cut wide.

These are Captain Withington's letters to his wife.
