Monroe was three years older than Marcellus Pointer and was married and living in Shelby Co, Tenn in 1860. His first wife and their two children died during the war. Monroe enlisted in Company L, the Maynard Rifles, of the 154th Tenn Inf in March 1862. He was wounded in the neck at Shiloh, then discharged for disability in Kentucky during Bragg's Kentucky Campaign. He had some sort of serious heart condition. Later, he was conscripted by the state of Mississippi and ended the war at the Grenada supply depot, on light duty. A Memphis City Directory shows he was living in a hotel in that city in 1866; occupation, salesman. He remarried in 1867 and had several children, but he died relatively young--1890--probably due to his heart condition.

I wonder about that dark spot in his ear. I know he was wounded 5 times in the war, and looks kind of gaunt in the picture. So it's possible this was taken earlier than Mary C's picture, possibly right after the end of the war?

This is Monroe's first wife, Martha Tennessee Marsh, taken ca 1863, when one of the children was still alive. They appear to be in mourning.

One reason I think think #10 is Marcellus Pointer's wife is this picture of his daughter Lillian (Lillie). The book she's holding and the wooden chair seem to match up well.
