Lincoln Cornstalks and Beanpoles

OTD - May 28, 1862 President Lincoln appears before the Committee on the Conduct of War and describes a 400-foot railroad bridge across the Potomac built by Col. Henry Haupt as having nothing in it but cornstalks and beanpoles.

This bridge actually crossed Potomac Creek in Stafford County, VA, not the Potomac River.
