Just wondering what Longstreet's men in general and the 16th Georgia Infantry in particular would have been wearing in Spring of 1864? This would be after they returned to Virginia from TN (Fort Sanders, Beans Station, etc) So maybe at the Wilderness & Spotsylvania? Would their uniforms have looked anything like this? What do the dark collar and cuffs indicate on this uniform? Are those cuffs or a shirt underneath? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Longstreets Corp just prior to their departure to Tennessee in latter 1863 were issued new uniforms. These consisted of what historians today label as the Richmond Depot-II pattern shell jackets. These were made with imported British Blue-Grey woolen army cloth, and light blue wool trousers. They were frequently mistaken for Federal soldiers by this new issue uniform when they arrived in Tennessee. Issuances in the Spring of 1864 were mostly the same, with some minor amounts of domestic wool or jean cloth.

In the photo in question the subject is wearing a frock coat apparently with trim facings... not something typically still found in 1864ish time period. More commonly found in 1861-62 era with carry over militia styles and early commutation era goods.

Thanks Frederick14Va! My husband's gg grandfather was in the 16th GA and was killed at Spotsylvania. The family has no picture of him in uniform. I am trying to find a local artist who will use an image of an appropriately uniformed man and combine it with a picture of my husband's ancestor for the face/features to paint a portrait. A surprise for Christmas.
Do you happen to have a picture of an appropriately uniformed private? Any help would be most appreciated.

I believe I remember reading about the mistaken identity issue when some of Longstreet's newly uniformed men arrived at Chickamauga? The 16th arrived late and was not engaged at Chickamauga, but I believe it was others of Longstreets force?
