Many serious uniform people avoid the G.I. The Illustrated History of the American Soldier, His Uniform and His Equipment. This is understandable because some of the books are not that informative. This should not stop forum members who study Confederate uniforms from buying Johnny Reb The Uniform of the Confederate Army, 1861-1865 by Leslie D. Jensen.

Most people who study Confederate uniforms will recognize the name Les Jensen. This book is mostly photographs and a bit short on written descriptions. Still for the price this is not a bad investment, enjoy the photos but just don't expect too much detailed information.

Much the same can be said about G.I. The Illustrated History of the American Soldier, His Uniform and His Equipment book Billy Yank The Uniform of the Union Army 161-1865 by Michael J. McAfee and John P. Langellier.

I have most of the series, which I mainly bought for the photographs. The text isn't so much, but the views are really worth it. I also recommend it for those looking for good photographic information.

I have the Union edition and I concur with your opinion. The text is slim and I bought it for the photos. The Confederate one discusses casualty photos a lot iirc.

Michael J. McAfee is an expert on Zouave uniforms and has a wonderful collection of Civil War photographs.

I agree. For its size and cost, its a great little uniform book. FWIW, Les Jensen, the author wrote a groundbreaking and still definitive monograph on Confederate jackets supplied by the quartermaster department.

Les Jensen has wore these articles for the Company of Military Historians Journal. Sadly the issues with the Confederat Jackets are no longer available:
