In the museum at the Chimborazo hospital site in Richmond, uniforms of a Confederate Surgeon and Assistant Surgeon are on display.
Surgeons had the rank and pay of a Major of cavalry and Assistant Surgeons had the rank and pay of a Captain of cavalry.
In the photo above, the uniform on the left was worn by Dr. John F.M. Geddings of South Carolina. The black cuffs and collar with gold stars indicate the rank of surgeon.
The uniform on the right belonged to Assistant Surgeon William E. Michie, who served with the 19th Georgia Infantry. The three gold bars on the collar and the gold braid on the sleeves indicate the rank of assistant surgeon.
