For those who have an interest I will periodically post examples from my collection of the 14 different Confederate States General Issue postage stamps (and some other CW Postal History).

Confederate States Stamp #1 - the first general issue Confederate stamp was a lithograph printed by the Richmond Va firm of Hoyer & Ludwig. This Five cent stamp paid the general letter rate until July 1, 1862 when the cost to mail a letter rose to ten cents. The earliest known uses of this stamp were in October 1861. Three printing stones (Stone A/B, Stone 1 & Stone 2) were used. The earliest known use of Stone 2 was in December 1861.

This stamp was printed in various shades of green. There are numerous plate varieties, some of which are very rare.

I have a couple of green ten centers featuring Jefferson Davis but besides the twenty cent (George Washington) and the two cent (Andrew Jackson) were there any other personalities featured? The last two were in blue ink weren't they? Like I said I have couple but am hoping this thread, and future posts on it, would help educate me on the subject of C.S. stamps.

In Episode 4 of the Ken Burns documentary, Shelby Foote talks about a Confederate soldier who was on furlough in Richmond and stopped Davis in the street who asked him "Sir, Mister, be you Jefferson Davis?" Davis said that he was. He had thought so, the soldier said "You look so much like a Confederate postage stamp."
I read somewhere that Postmaster Reagan chose to put and keep Jefferson Davis on the stamps for that very reason, To show the populus what Davis looked like.

Southern icons all, they all appeared on currency as well, except for Thomas Jefferson, I think.

Interesting thread on Confederate stamps. Thought bump since question on them.
Thanks for the bump !

As a little boy of about eight years old, I fell in love with the stamp collecting hobby.
I had an Uncle who was a serious philatelist, and he really got me interested and involved with this community.

He even gave me two Confederate stamps.
(These CSA stamps were in terrible condition back then ... and I'm sure worthless ...but "gold" to a little eight year old history nerd ).

:bounce:

I had two "stamp albums" that I thought were lost forever, but I found them in an attic box about five years ago.
Forgotten childhood memories immediately returned !

But the two ragged CSA postage stamps were no where to be found.
