One often hears of the pro-Confederate Copperheads but did not anti-war or perhaps pro-Union secret societies exist in the Confederacy? The Peace and Constitutionals Society existed in Arkansas's Ozark Mountains. As did the Peace Party in Texas. The Peace Society was very active in parts of Alabama. The Heroes of America were active in North Carolina. These societies often helped escaped Union prisoners, and spirited away Confederate deserters to Union lines. They passed information to the Federals. They also engaged in other activities designed to end or the war or aid the Union.
