I is a bit interesting that Canada was not only the place of refuge for escaped slaves before the Civil War, but many former Confederates took refuge there after the Civil War. Jefferson Davis took refuge in Canada for a while was as did Jubal Early and George Pickett. Some ares in Canada had small communities of former Confederates. It would appear that the former Confederates were usually well treated during their stay in Canada. The only refugees that Canada seemed to take an issue to were the Union draft dodgers and Union deserters. Canada threatened to draft them into the Canadian military. Hotels in places likes Windsor Canada were filled with Union draft dodgers.
