Thanks. I thought "Rails to Oblivion" by Gabel - which is on your list - was, as others have said, the last word on the subject. Do you have any comments, bones to pick, errors to identify? I thought his essay on the lack of, and the deterioration of, locomotives was good. Is it wrong?

No, I have no problems with his study. I'd change a bit here and there, but I have no disagreement worth noting.
