Good Afternoon from Massachusetts:

Years ago, I remember an excellent essay that categorized the ironclads built in the Confederacy according to hull design, etc.. I have since lost my copy and cannot, for the life of me, remember the source. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance. GFJ

Welcome @GFJ.

I seem to remember the paper you're talking about.
I can no longer find that essay either.

This is not a substitution, but perhaps it may help:

Blowing my own trumpet, may I recommend you purchase "The Southern Iron Navy". Ironclad and Iron protected Vessels of the Confederate States Navy 1861 - 1865 by J. W Wallis. Available from Wargamevault.com as a downloadable, printable PDF. The result of more than 30 years research, received wisdom and myths disproved. Potted histories and scale line drawings of each ship where possible.

Thanks. It did help.

I would recommend William Stills, Iron Afloat. It does an excellant job of describing the different classes of Confederate ironclad and is available these days at a very reasonable price.

navsource.org NavSource Online: "Old Navy" Ship Photo Archive. The page lists ships of the Confederate Navy alphabetically from CSS Admiral to CSS Yazoo. The listings include a service history. In many cases photo & anecdotal entries are included.

I definitely agree with you. Anyone who doesn't own Still's seminal work has missed a really useful tool. I'll check my copy again, but I don't think the essay I'm looking for was written by Professor Still.

Some updates:
Rebelatsea's book, "Ironclads And Iron Protected Vessels Of The Confederate States Navy 1861 -1865" can currently be reached thru this link:

Also, the Navsource.org link for the "Old Navy", can be reached here: http://www.navsource.org/archives/09/86/86idx.htm

(Navsource could us a nice drawing of the CSS Nashville (II).

Great Resources!

Nino.
