1875 engraving or lithograph showing the Confederate Flag surrounded by various battle scenes.

VMI photo

Edit: Under the top right scene it says 'The Crater.' I can't figure out the others.

Top left is maybe one of those "Lee to the rear" episodes. Bottom left looks like CSS Virginia ramming a blockader. Bottom right might be a surrender scene (or not). 1875 seems a bit early to be engaging in nostalgia for the war. Could it be later?

A form of this lithograph appears in an 1879 volume of "Father Ryan's Poems", and accompanies the poem "The Conqured Banner." http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=uc1.$b29233;view=2up;seq=164 So 1875 should be about right.

Father Ryan has a Catholic High School named after him here in Nashville. At one time it covered much of the grounds of Ed Buford's house called "By-Ma." Not too long ago it relocated. Buford was an ex-Confederate POW who started a business here, and whose son, Eddie, was an unofficial "Ace" in WWI. I'm related to the Bufords, so It's funny how things all tie together.
