What are some good books about Confederate flags. How about this one?

While focusing on the AOT, I have long wanted a copy of The Battle Flags of the Confederate Army of Tennessee, by Howard Madaus for a long time. Used copies are very expensive of this book however.

Glenn Dedmont has several of these books out.

Found out the hard way those books by Glenn Dedmondt can be a little off.

Several years ago an old friend of mine that makes flags made a replica of the 60th Alabama's flag, (a unit both of our ancestors served in), and he made it off the description of in that book. The book told an old story of it being made by some ladies, I think, in Tennessee and how it made like so.

Well flash forward a few years, and the friend of mine that made it got to see the actual flag in Chicago, (where it sits in storage as a war trophy from Appomattox but not out for viewing because it might offend somebody as I've been told), and while it was a 2nd National flag with battle honors on it, low and behold he noticed right off it was a Richmond Depot made flag with several differences from how Dedmondt's book described it!

I got into trouble with that old friend and ticked off some other friends royally the other day over a new flag discovered and sold as a Tennessee regiment's flag flown at Gettysburg. I knew right off looking at it there was no way it was at Gettysburg, and I called him in online and he confirmed my suspicions of it being a circa 1865 flag. Plus I said some unkind words online about the flag's discoverer that also contributed to the fury that came my way.

I bought a copy of that one at the former Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond when I was there working on Ironclads. It's a good introduction to the subject with a good bit of interesting information, but possibly too simplified. One major criticism is that the black-and-white line drawings are all reproduced in a center color section, meaning there's a LOT of duplication for such a short work. My main complaint however is that there are NO pictures of actual existing surviving flags - only drawings or paintings in garish bold primary colors. For example, nowhere in either illustrations nor text are you informed that the original silk battle flags were actually PINK in color and not the expected red!
