Confederate Coinage

In my free time when I'm home and at my desk I'll get a hankering to search E-bay for some relatively cheap Items to have and display here at the house. I have been working on a coinage display for my Parlor and wanted some C.S.A. coins in it. Well, I know for a fact I can't afford any of the 4 real Half Dollar coins that are out there from 1861. Even the restrikes are high. The Few authentic pennies and its restrikes are kinda costly too. I found these reproductions though. The penny and half dollar are exact dimensions. I like 'em. The stars though on the Half Dollar look more like flowers to me than stars. The $20 and $5 dollar Gold pieces I bought just because I could, and they were available and had C.S.A. on them. I don't think they ever really existed. Maybe in a movie (Sahara).

Keep in mind that many "regular" 1861-O half dollars were issued under Southern or Confederate jurisdiction. The Federal government had only issued 330,000 in 1861. After Louisiana seceded, over 1,200,000 were issued under Louisiana jurisdiction. When the Confederate States of America was formed, another 960,000+ was issued under their jurisdiction. So if you come across an 1861-0 half dollar, it was likely Southern or Confederate issued.

I didn't realize the Confederacy even issued coinage but I can see how, at the time, such might have been required.

I've heard of the 4 half dollars. Didn't the Confederacy experiment with a dime as well? The gold coins , I seriously doubt there ever was such a thing.I think they are fantasy pieces used as movie props.

Oh I keep it in my mind, once in a while I'll scour E-bay to see if I can find one of those 1861 -O and see what it's going for. When I find a good one I'll nab it for sure.

I don't remember which one of the coins was confiscated but Jefferson Davis had a Confederate coin in his possession when he was captured by Yankee calvary. That coin more than likely made it back up north as someone's souvenir. Who knows what became of it? I think it was the half dollar but am not sure.He was also "relieved" of his medal from Sabine Pass. It was made from a Mexican coin.Again someone's souvenir.
