Confederate Canteen strap question

I am doing a recreation of a confederate soldier and am having some trouble finding any information as to how the linen canteen straps are connected. I have seen some that are simply hand stitched together, one that has a simple slide buckle and I imagine that back in the day they were simply tied together.. what would be the general opinion?

All of the above. Some stiched some had buckles, some had buttons. They also used leather straps with buckles as well as acquired Yankee canteens. As long as you use period materials there's no right or wrong for CS straps. Take a look at some of the better sutlers websites like the Regimental Quartermaster, they offer a few different choices for canteen straps.

I got it from there or one of the competitors....it was si,mply a strap that fed thru the canteen. I checked google but information was sparse. Thank you for your response.
