I am needing help with campaigning. I have recently done away with the A frame and heater and went with the blanket and fire. I am looking for anything that explains what a soldier of AoT carried on the campaign. I have searched for it on here and possibly have overlooked it but I've had to no luck.

Thanks for your time
Tim.

There are many detailed accounts that pertain to Confederate soldiers in general, not specifically the AOT. A couple that come to mind are Carleton McCarthy's Detailed Minutiae of Soldier Life in the Army of Northern Virginia and Bell I. Wiley's book on Confederates, Johnny Reb, both of which go into considerable detail regarding camp life.

There are numerous books which go into detail about a Confederate soldier's experience in the field (versus camp life). With that said, the information Tim seeks will be found on the following forum. Tim also posted this question on said forum.

I believe Tim is trying to recreate/experience what the Conferate soldier of the AOT experienced while in the field.

Seems it would be at what stage in the duration and what place the Confederate troops were?

Some Rebs were superbly equipped at that time and place and, at the next time and place, they were wearing rags, starving, and throwing rocks. To a lesser extent, so were the Yanks.

I'll admit to being a battle guy, but I have no interest in regiments, brigades or companies. Nor ancestors --

Bottom line is that one can paint one picture of this campaign or battle, and a different picture of the next.

I'm more than a little confused by this combination of quotation and illustration!? The picture shows the Confederate attack into Corinth, Miss., by the troops under Earl Van Dorn who was probably the only actual Mississippian involved. (Note the Van Dorn pattern corps flag carried by troops who I think are supposed to be members of the Missouri State Guard!) Corinth is a L O N G way from the Potomac, so that would have to be quite a charge!

I never really intended for the quote to be so closely associated with the picture - the quote was put up when the blog first started, and the Corinth picture I added years later, simply because it's a great illustration of a Mississippi battle. The 40th Mississippi Infantry was involved in the attack into Corinth, and had their flag captured by the 17th Iowa Infantry. This flag still exists in the State Historical Society of Iowa collections, and it is a Van Dorn Pattern flag. Here is a link to the information on that flag: http://iowamuseumcollection.pastperfectonline.com/webobject/4179FDDF-9360-4C2F-9D53-349260465455

Thanks for the clarification; I've been to Pea Ridge, Ark. several times as well as reenactments at Shiloh and Corinth and always associate Van Dorn's army with western or Trans-Mississippi troops: Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, and Louisiana.

I think that there were a number of Mississippi units that had Van Dorn Pattern Battleflags, but most of them were surrendered at Vicksburg when the siege ended, and unfortunately most of those flags have since disappeared. There is a Van Dorn pattern flag in the collections of Confederate Memorial Hall in New Orleans that is believed to be that of Cowan's Mississippi Battery.
