Confederate Camp

Hello!

I'm writing a novel set during the Civil War, and I was wondering if anyone has/can direct me to any photographs, drawings, or detailed descriptions of a Confederate camp, either in winter or on the march. Movies would be good too, as long as they are historically accurate. One of my characters is conscripted into the Army of Northern Virginia in early 1864, and I want to know how camps were laid out/organized.

These are fascinating photos. I see that some of the boys built pretty good cabins for winter quarters. Heck, when I was a kid camping on the Missouri River bluffs, I'd have been very proud to have such a cabin.

Great photos. In the first photo, you can't help but love the guy on the far left who is undoubtably rocking a disco shirt from 1977, with the mustache to boot! In the 3rd photo, you've got to love the dandy who showed up to the photo shoot sporting what looks to be the world's largest bow tie only to be told to hold an axe with enthusiasm!!!

I've always cherished these early War images of the 9th Mississippi at Pensacola, Florida posted by @ucvrelics.com and @AUG351 .

These guys knew my ancestors in the 7th Mississippi and fought along side of them for the duration.

The 9th & 7th Mississippi were consolidated at least twice during the War. The 10th Mississippi was part of that brigade as well.

That said, I also recommend that you check out some of the "letters" section on the 7th Mississippi website.

Camp life is described in detail from first person accounts.

Ha! Yeah, not sure if that guy in the third image is wearing a huge cravat or just a neckerchief tied in bow tie fashion. Whatever it is it looks like it certainly kept his neck warm! Always loved the attitude of the guys in those images, especially the first; I can just imagine the range of different characters and personalities in there.

The Texans in those photos were all most likely from around Galveston. It is believed that Pvt. Tom Blessing, who was a professional photographer before the war, took the photos of the camp. He served in Co. L "Lone Star Rifles" of the 1st Texas, which was recruited in Galveston County, so it is probable that he took photos of his own company members.

2nd South Carolina in camp.

This isn't the 2nd South Carolina. I've seen it labeled as SC Confederate artillerymen before, possibly the Chestnut Light Artillery. In F.T. Miller's "Photographic History of the Civil War" its labeled as a camp of Confederate pickets on Stono Inlet near Charleston, taken by George S. Crook.
