Confederate Battle Flag Locations

It seems like every battlefield, museum, etc. all have at least one battleflag which belonged to a particular regiment. Does anyone know of a database or listing of the locations of flags by regiment? I would like to find some of the flags of my ancestors, especially any from Wofford's, Jackson's, or Gist's brigades. If there isn't this may be something I will start documenting on my site.

I would love to have this information. I only have the flag for 17th Texas Infantry, Allen's Regiment.

The Museum of the Confederacy has about 550 flags in their collection. You can download the listings in PDF format. The easiest way to navigate to the flag information is to use the site map......I don't think you need to be a member to access the information.

I've been to many museums, Port Hudson has a couple, also their respective state historical societies have listing of flags in their inventory.

There are a host of fellow vexillology historians that have been working on and doing just that for several decades. This isn't just a "where is it"... its also an academic detailed analytical evaluation and examination of the respective flags and their reported history. Who, what and how the flags were made... who received them, and when issued.... when used and where... where are they now... and the provenance of where they came from., detailed drawings and photos documenting each for record... Documenting any and every related flag known to exist...

Unfortunately there is no single publication yet at hand. There have been segments published regarding the flags used by a given state. Many of the flags that were returned or donated are currently held in state archives, loaned out to, or in possession of various regional or local museums. These also tend to float about on display loans, so some tend to stay put but a few years at a time. Also noted in this research is the many out there in private held collections not of public domain. Documentation and authentication of "new" flags that surface at auctions, sales, or have been donated. Basically as of now we are on the 2nd and 3rd generation of historical scholars paddling through this extensive endeavor...

Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond has one of the largest single collections. They currently possess the flags returned by the war department of those (then) identified as from Virginia. The war department possession of unidentified flags are also part of this collection... They also had many donated from private holders post-war as well... MOC's collection is only a segment of the surviving flags out there. The War department when these flags were still in their possession also loaned out flags to be used at GAR or Regimental reunions... many of those loaned out were never returned...

Also of note is that each respective Confederate unit on the average... had about 2-5 different flags over the course of the war... pattern changes... worn out... battle damaged... then replaced... the former commonly retained by some ranking officer,... given as a gift to the widow of some notable officer... later donated somewhere... or not... Of those captured.... many were turned into the war department per directives... especially those within the Army of the Potomac... some however were not turned in... Army of the James... none captured were turned in... they all went off kept as war prizes... or later donated to some Northern state archives or museum....

As mentioned this has been an ongoing process for several decades already... huge undertaking and lots of work still to go as more examples and flags surface out of attics and private collections...

I immediate recognize that one... 1st Texas ANV flag.... Few years ago did a research essay on these mystery late war Richmond Depot-ANV 12 star issued flags.... That had previously been missed as a specific flag pattern issue... the design feature was not a fluke... discovered a number of these out there... sufficient to label it as its own respective pattern issue....

I have two say I find that quite interesting that the Confederate Museum has over 550 different battle flags but no matter how many reenactments or parades you go to their seems to be the same flag.
