Won this one on eBay last week. Love the coloring on him. Looks like a southern 2nd Lieutenant. Unsure of his branch or service. Modern pencil ID as "Cox". Probably untraceable given the common name and rank.

Backmark is Vannerson with a 2c federal revenue stamp.

The timeline on this photo is interesting as well. The federal revenue stamp and Vannerson backmark create a relatively narrow window of when this photo was purchased. At the end of April 1865 Vannerson would partner with another photographer and adopt a new backmark (Vannerson and Jones). Meaning the CDV was likely purchased soon after the Fall of Richmond, but before Vannerson could update his backmark. Perhaps purchased as a federal souvenir or memento of Cox's service.

My thanks to the CW Faces FB group for helping me determine when Vannerson and Jones became partners.

At any rate, a neat CDV with interesting content and a desirable backmark .

And of course, if anyone recognizes 2nd Lt Cox, I wound love to hear!
