Conduct Meritorious Commendation

I'm researching a Union soldier whose Discharge paper contains the notation "Conduct Meritorious". I need to find out how this was earned and how it was awarded. I understand that maybe it was given to a unit that my soldier was in (53rd Ill. Inf.) in relation to its actions at the Battle of Corinth. I've Googled everything I can think of and still have no insight into this process or idea whether that guess is correct. Any help would be welcome! SuzanneA

Wow looks like they got new Springfields!!! :bounce:

"The Regiment was engaged in the siege of Corinth, and for meritorious conduct on the skirmish line were furnished with new Springfield rifles. Marched to Grand Junction, LaGrange, Holly Springs. Miss., and Memphis. Tenn., arriving there July 21, 1862. The weather having been very hot, the troops had suffered very much from heat and scarcity of water on the march." http://civilwar.illinoisgenweb.org/history/053.html
