During the Civil War the U.S Army had three speeds of marching. How did number of steps for the U.S. Army compare with other the steps per minute in world armies. We must have some "marching" experts here on CWT. So here is an opportunity to impress us all.

Highland March was how many steps per minute?
British Rifle Regiments took how many steps per minute?
The French Foreigner Legion took how many steps per minute?
Most German armies took how many steps per minute?
Why is Australian Quick March did at 116 steps per minute while Canadian Quick March is done at 120 steps per minute?

Bonus question: Why did the U.S. Army in 1939 go from 128 steps per minute to 120 steps per minute.

British standard pace is 116.
Rifle regiments 140, oddly the bands march at 144. Can play at 180 (double time ) for a short while.
Highland regiments 116, except with the pipes and drums when it is 112.
The British slow march is 70.
USA Standard is currently 120 but also has a half pace 15" 116 paces ?. I can't answer you question why the change in 1939, sorry.
The Standard German Forces pace is 114
Ditto Slow 60
The Foreign Legion pace is 88.
The goose step was and is performed at quick march pace which depends on whose army and whether it is high Chile), or half (Russia).
Australia /New Zealand seem to have followed British practice, while Canada gas followed the USA.

John Phillips Sousa marches are 120 beats a minute, but that might be introducing a "chicken and egg" element to the question.
