Well friends, persistence pays off. After scouring the internet and finding well used copies for $500+ and like new copies for upwards of $900+, I ran across this last night:

"Collecting The Confederacy" Reference Book by Shannon Pritchard.
Very fine copy of this landmark reference book on collecting Confederate War Relics. Almost new condition.
$295.00

Needless to say I emailed and got a reply this morning that it is available and has been set aside for me. I'll be calling later today to pay for it.

Is $295 a lot to pay for a book? Absolutely! And I do not do so lightly. But as I prepare to venture into the murky waters of Confederate items I consider it an invaluable resource that will help me avoid a mistake of many times the magnitude of the book price.

As @Lanyard Puller, @ucvrelics and others advise, first purchase the book(s). I found that to be very true with the Confederate shotgun I discovered (See discussion here: https://civilwartalk.com/threads/confederate-shotgun.193805/ )

I'm confident that this is a smart purchase at a bargain price.

IIRC the original price from the purchaser was $150. You will not regret this purpose. I understand Shannon is working on an update that will include Confederate scabbards, a big gap in reference sources and knowledge that is difficult to acquire.
i agree, I don't regret this purchase at all. I'm confident that the knowledge I gain from this book (not to mention the pure enjoyment of reading it and learning in general) will save me from making a bad mistake. The $100 I spent on the shotgun book saved me at least $1k - a ten-fold return on my investment at minimum.

Would I have paid $500+? Maybe. Maybe. For the reasons stated. But I'm glad I didn't have to 😀

Not a bad price and it will save you a LOT in the long run.

Book arrived today. It is in like new condition (if I didn't know better I'd say it was brand new). To my surprise it is autographed by the author and numbered #173 of 1500 printed.

I havent had time to give it more than a quick flip through, but I can tell already this is going to be both an educational and invaluable guide and tool in my journey into Confederate items.

I report on this not to brag but to say to anyone on the fence about whether this book is worth the substantial investment of your money, I can say unequivocally that it is.

The original price was $35 not $150. I approached Ted Savas about reprinting this book. I think it's still under contract with Savas Beatie, Ted has reached out to Shannon but he has not heard back from Shannon

Only time I ever saw a copy of this book, I had never heard of it, and thought the price asked at $175 was ridiculous.

I've been kicking myself in the behind ever since...
