Col William Wellford Randolph

CSA: Company C, 2nd Virginia Regiment Infantry
Son of Dr. Robert Carter Randolph and his wife Lucy M. Welford. Living at White Post in 1850. He attended University of Virginia. Married Ada Stuart of King George County. Enlisted at Camp Jackson on Bolivar Heights as a private. On April 20, 1862 elected Captain, to Lieut. Colonel on April 26 of 1864. He was on recruiting detail for 3 months then on special duty. Had leave to serve in Virginia Legislature from September of 1863 to March of 1864. His life came to an end at the Battle of the Wilderness in the 28th year of his age.

Captain Randolph was present at Gettysburg and was favorably mentioned in Colonel John Q. A. Nadenbousch's report of the battle. "I deem it but just to make honorable mention of the gallant conduct of Captain W. W. Randolph, Company C, whose valuable services in assisting in managing the left wing added much to the efficiency of my regiment." As the Battle of the Wilderness opened on May 5, 1864, the 2nd Virginia was posted to the north of the Orange Turnpike on the left flank of Johnson's Division, which constituted the left of the Confederate position until Early came up somewhat later. A publication of the 2nd Virginia Living History Group (see link) titled The 3 Brigades described Randolph's final battle.

"While in this precarious situation, the line of the Second "had to be continually stretched out towards the left," in order to counter repeated Federal flanking attacks. Colonel Randolph conducted the defense of his position actively and decisively, even ordering the color-bearer at one point to plant the Second's standard beside him self in order to steady the regiment's line." Randolph was shot in the head during the action and died shortly afterward.
