Came across a brief bio and he seems quite a colorful character.

He was a native of Connecticut and attended West Point and Yale.....but was dismissed from both for drunkeness. He practiced law in Hopkinsville KY and entered service as a Captain of the Oak Grove rangers. Promoted to Col of 2nd Ky Cav CSA. He fought at least in/at Clarksville, Fort Donelson, Parkers Crossroads, and Perryville. Few details are known of his experiences as he failed to file after action reports. In 1864 he was suspended from command for insubordination. Woodward was court-martialed four times, suspended once and reprimanded once. On a drunken spree in August 1864 he rode into Hopkinsville with a pistol in each hand, exclaiming he was going to singlehandily take the town.....he was shot off his horse and killed by a sharpshooter.

Colorful character for sure. Someone who could easily be described in the seldom used description "a real piece of work". And he started out young by getting booted out of Yale and West Point. Quite an accomplishment, and that was just the beginning. And a truly sad ending for him.

And how did he keep on getting promoted?

Interesting guy. I would have enjoyed having a drink and talking with him.
