Found this picture of Thayer on pinterest (linked from the Thayer School of Engineering). It´s the first time that I see an actual photograph of him and not just a painting.
Thayer (1785-1872) graduated from West Point in 1808 and served as engineer during the War of 1812. Afterwards he studied at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, France. In 1817 he was made Superintendent of the USMA and stayed in this position until 1833. In this lengthy period he focused the studies on engineering and earned the sobriquet "Father of West Point". After resigning from the position he continued his engineering service until he finally retired as Colonel in 1863; being brevetted to Brigadier General a year later.
