Civilwarincolour - Great photo of the Colonel ! You called him a General but I don't think he ever made it to General. He was Commander of the 43rd Battalion,1st Virginia Cavalry, and promoted Colonel on Dec 7th,1864.

Very good. Thanks.

That's an excellent photo of Mosby.

Thank you both so much!

That's an excellent photo of Mosby. I like the Grey Ghost, too! He had some interesting adventures. Read somewhere that he looked different in each photo that was taken of him. Have seen several and tend to agree.

What I like about him was that he defied the system. In an era when lining up a wall of troops and marching them against another wall of troops was considered the right thing to do he showed that you can be effective in other ways.

I particularly like the stories of him in later life meeting a very young George Patton and showing him how he achieved some of his success. For those that don't know the Patton family at the time lived in Pasadena, CA on what is now part of the Huntington Library. The library has beautiful grounds that you can wander around and really get a sense that you are in a world all of your own. I have been there a few times and each time I can imagine Mosby and Patton riding the grounds. There are a few trees on the property that must have been there at the time, I can just see the two of them stopping at one of these trees for a rest. If you ever get the chance, pay a visit to the library. There is no mention of Mosby or Patton there, you have to do further research to find where the Patton family lived, but when you are walking the grounds you are immediately taken back.
