In another thread we are talking about Boston militia and we are looking at uniforms in the photo that are very likely Boston policemen. Did many Southern cities have uniformed police forces? If so is there information about their uniforms or photos? The point is to understand period Southern police uniforms so as we do not call someone in a photo a Southern militia or soldier when in fact they are a policeman. The same issue arises with firemen in uniforms.

I think the internal police service was done by Home Guards or LDT, and they did not need special uniforms.
In the armies, I am almost certain that the soldiers of the units involved in the military police service had a sort of badge, such as ambulance corps men or sharpshooters; I've always hoped to see such a picture, but for now I have to keep my theory for me.

Some Northern towns had uniformed police forces by 1860, it would seem that at least a few large Southern towns had put their police force in uniform. By 1860.
