Ammo Cleaning up a Columbiad ball

Decided to do some cleanup work on the columbiad ball I had posted about last week. The original owner had painted it black long ago and it was starting to give out, leaving black grime and paint chips everywhere. I sanded all of this off and put some Gempler's on it to take care of the rust, which really did the trick. After pouring some in the powder cavity for good measure and rolling the ball around to make sure it was evenly applied, I started to smell the distinct sulfur odor of black powder. I assume the Gempler's had dislodged some powder which was caked on the inside. Nothing dangerous but a neat reminder of the ball's past.

After the Gempler's was applied inside and out, I rolled the ball from the shed to the house and weighed it out of curiosity. It was just shy of 100 pounds, just as I had assumed. Definitely not the type of ball to play catch with, I'm afraid.

After all that it's looking nice and spiffy on this base my grandpa made for me, puts my mind at ease to not have 100 pounds of iron concentrated on one square inch of my floor.

Was thinking of using it on a rusted sword blade but backed off. Afraid the blade would be all black. Anyone ever use it on a sword blade?
