Classroom Confederates

interesting you say that. we also have gameday once a week. students have to play a vintage board game or card game not using phones or computers. I have risk, monopoly, stratego, several axis and allies, some very old Milton Bradley games like broadside, dog fight, and battleship. Ive partnered with a local gaming shop to use school funds to purchase more. These games involve maps, history, strategy, critical thinking, and cooperation with others. the directions are printed on the box in some cases. They get points and make up work credit for finishing them and writing reflections. I have some miniature rules sets, but nobody has tackled that one yet
Chess?

High school freshmen. 14-15. 9th grade world History. Sometimes I do. In world history I use the figures from the MIddle ages, and the world wars. Where Im at in Georgia, we have pretty good support on thing like this. As long as I am showing figures from both sides, usually no one really cares. I even have some German Nazi figures when we study the world wars. Kids seem to like them
I used to have some CSA memorabilia in my office at my law firm, and one day one of the partners came down and told me there had been complaints and I needed to take them down. I countered by offering to put up some Union stuff to even it out, and the partner agreed. So then I had to go home and explain to my wife that work was MAKING me buy more Civil War stuff!

Isnt it amazing how in a school, law office, or any other institution with highly educated individuals, ignorance abounds!!!! Im a history buff and I love the civil war. Studying both sides and all aspects of it. This quite possibly was the greatest generation of Americans until ww2. Yet, we try to give them the same standards and norms we live by. Im a proud southerner whwo loves my history and my ancestors, eventhough I do not agree with everything they fought for. More than anything though, I am a proud American living in the greatest country in the history of the world. That generation of Americans saw our nation differently and were willing to die for it. Regardless of what side they were on, they all should be honored.
