Another view from our November trip to Vicksburg in the late 1960's, this time showing Marilynn standing beside the Surrender Monument which as has been discussed in its own separate thread has been replaced by the cannon barrel which stood here originally and currently resides in the NPS visitor center where it's protected from both the elements and visitors.
 
Nice photo! Looks as though the monument was already getting a bit battered!

No doubt that was the main reason it was replaced when the engraved cannon tube was discovered - there are visible chips on it from where idiot tourists have stolen pieces.

What's left of the original stone surrender monument is on display within the Vicksburg NMP Visitor Center.
