I am once again trying to put my personal library into some sort of order. This made me wonder about Civil War uniform resources other than books and how to store them. How do others handle storage issues?
The Company of Military Historians have publish 952 uniform plates in their Uniforms in America series. This includes over 50 Confederate uniform plates and over 100 Union uniform plates. These are in the 11 by 14 inch format and others have used this popular size to publish uniform plates. These I keep in protective sleeves and the sleeves in binders.
2. The Company of Military of Historians has given out uniform plates to members who attend conventions (only those who attended have these plates). These are in the 8 1/2 by 11 inch format. Don Troiani has put out uniform plates in this size as have others and it is a common size for other uniform plates. I keep these in 8 1/2 by 11 inch protective sleeves and the sleeves in binders.
3. Cranston Fine Art put out reprints of Knotel Civil War uniform plates in a 9 by 12 1/2 inch format and I have other uniform plates in the 9 by 12 3/4 inch format. There are no right size protective sleeves and binders for these and I put them in the 11 by 14 inch sleeves and binders.
4. I have a fair number of uniform plates in the 5 by 7 inch size. They are in 5 by 7 inch protective sleeves in a binder. I also keep smaller post card in the same binders.
In the end my binders, on my shelf where I keep them, are never looking good. Some are tall some are short. Some wider than others. I wonder how others store this kind of thing. What about protective sleeves put into protective boxes and stored flat? Anyone do this and if so how do you like it?
