Hello, I am new here, thank you for adding me! I am documenting the Civil War service of nearly twenty men in my family tree. Fifteen of them Union and five CSA. I am hoping to increase my knowledge in the following areas
  • What records and sources are available outside of CMSR and pension records
  • What records exist that are not on-line/not digitized
  • How to determine whether or not a person was in a given battle

Maybe if you post names and units with questions, and see what others might have on hand or want to share. Perhaps one thread per unit, or man, etc.

Lots of non-digitized records. Even at the National Archives, there are military records/documents from many units that are not microfilmed/digitized. Clothing receipt books, unit order and letter books, etc.

Relative to a given battle. For absolute confirmation, either a documentary account of the units, such as an official military report, or a post-war regimental history, memoir, etc., giving the name, or reference in military records to death, wounds, or capture. Or perhaps a claim given in a pension application.
