"A battery of artillery is worth a thousand muskets" - William T. Sherman

" . . . It will be a glorious day for our country when all the children within its borders shall learn that the four years of fratricidal war between the North and South was waged by neither with criminal or unworthy intent, but by both to protect what they conceived to be threatened rights and imperiled liberty: that the issues which divided the sections were born when the Republic was born, and were forever buried in an ocean of fraternal blood." - Maj. Gen. John B. Gordon

1. "Dig Johnnies, I'm coming for you!"
Newton Martin Curtis, as he threw a handful of shovels over the traverse at Ft. Fisher before leading the attack. The shovels had been sent forward with the suggestion of entrenching for a siege.

2. "Colonel, where is thy music ?"
" In our cartridge boxes."
Col. Thomas A Davies prompt reply to the leader of the mob in Baltimore. The 16th NY was the first regiment to march through the city unmolested. Musicians were recruited later, after the emergency call to the defense of Washington had passed.

"The Fourth of July is a bad day for a Federal officer to surrender." -- Colonel Orlando H. Moore, 25th Michigan Infantry, July 4, 1863.

(this quote's been on my wall, I wanted to put it somewhere)

In response to the post war debate about who bore responsibility for the CSA losing the Battle of Gettysburg:

"I always thought the Yankees had something to do with it."

Gen. George Pickett
