My 13 year old son has been self teaching minstrel banjo on my old fret less reproduction civil war banjo I've had for awhile. He has been playing almost a year now, and getting decent at it. He wants to be the next Bobby Horton!! Lol. He just needs I think some real lessons at this point. My question is, are there any minstrel banjo teachers in the Gettysburg, Pa area or maybe some good YouTube videos that he can learn from?

Thanks. I am not musically inclined at all as it skipped me in the family genes....

You described me perfectly. I love and appreciate all forms of music but have no aptitude or ability to play any instrument. Or sing for that matter. I tried to self-teach myself 5 string banjo but my wife stepped in and stopped me because my efforts were so excruciating to hear.

Yup, I get you 100%!! I "sing" too...if we want to call it that! Lol!

Hey, Bill--looks like there are a number of banjo teachers in Gettysburg. That's not my instrument, so I'm not plugged into that scene, but it would seem to me that at least some of those who advertise as a banjo teacher would include minstrel banjo or could point you to someone who does teach minstrel banjo.
Click here to see the listing: https://takelessons.com/pa/gettysburg/banjo-lessons

Also, if you do a Google search on "Minstrel banjo lessons" and then select "videos" from the search results, you'll find a bunch of online tutorial videos about banjos:
Click here: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=Minstrel+banjo+lessons

Click on the title of this one for an example: "Introduction to Minstrel Style Banjo"

There are also instruction books available online, just search for "Minstrel banjo tutorial"

Looks like there's a lot out there, just takes a little poking around online to find what you need.

It's great that you're encouraging your son's musical ability! Scientific tests have shown that playing music, reading music, and learning an instrument are some of the powerful ways to stimulate the mind, especially in kids.

Best of luck!

Thanks so much Claude!! These are some great leads! I'm horrible with Internet searches and what I've found on YouTube wasn't good instructional. I will pursue these leads! And who knows, in a few years he may p,at along side you at the Gettysburg VC!! He already wants to play out on the battlefield once he gets more profiecient
