After a bit of pondering I think I might've come up with an answer to the penguin. Either option is connected the CSS Shenandoah, I think either it could've picked up a penguin when visiting Melbourne in Australia which does have native penguins, or it could've picked up a penguin from a captured ship, as sailors often brought penguins with them to stay aboard back in the 1800s.

Who knows? Northern rockhopper penguins live on the island, and those live for about 10 years. It most likely survived the journey and made its way into an English zoo perhaps. One could argue that the shawl was a uniform and that it was recruited, and that since it wasn't paid off in Liverpool, technically it was still a confederate sailor, thus being the last soldier. But that's taking it way too far. Although it still is a funny story of a confederate holdout.

I don't buy the Satanist part of that. I think it's exciting or dangerous. I hav read that quote a lot of times. I think there are layers to it.
