Who doesn't like a nice glass of Port for a dessert wine? So can I assume that Americans were drinking wine from Portugal at the time of the Civil War?

I was wonder where most of the Civil War era wind came from. France must have contributed much of the wine, but I am not sure if Italian or Portuguese wind was drank. I would take it some wine was made locally. So can I assume good hosts just before the Civil War were serving fine French wines?

Americans had to be importing Chianti wine from Italy. Come on Americans were not low life beasts in 1860.
