Civil War Chapel Burns

Woke up to the news that the log Civil War chapel that was on Chambersburg St. burned to the ground overnight. It was a beautiful log chapel that they actually held period services every Sunday in.

It was a source of controversy because it was built without the proper permits and one local wanted it torn down. Because it was a church national authorities are involved in the investigation. No cause has been determined but sounds like they are thinking arson is a possibility.

This controversial building was built about five years ago. It has no historical value. Strangely, it was built on the site of a 2004 arson. What is the story? Why is this place 'controversial"?

I never meant to imply that it was of any historical value. It was a very beautiful building and the fact that he held period services made it some place that visitors enjoyed.

As I said in my originial post it was controversial because some politician wanted it torn down because he didn't have all the proper permits when he built it. They were fighting it out in the courts.

On the news this morning the preacher said he plans to rebuild it by April.

Fire Ruled Arson - 3 Teens Sought

ATF agents ruled the chapel fire arson. Burning down a church is a federal crime under the Church Arson Prevention Act of 1996.
According to Gettysburg.travel the church was "built from research, letters and accounts of soldier chapels being built among the soldiers camps."
