What is this? Civil War cap box tin?

Greetings to all,


I have a cap box tin from "United States Army Caps, U.M.C. Co., Bridgeport, Conn.". I am receiving controversy statements for the time period of this cap box. A well known CW dealer classifies these as to be CW period and others declare this to be post CW. So I don't know. Could some one out there be helpful. The box seams to have original caps inside.

Appears the "well known CW dealer" may be a bit inaccurate...

Union Metallic Cartridge Company ("UMC") was founded in 1867... It later merged with Remington Arms in 1912, both still appeared under their own labels for awhile longer... "Rem-UMC" headstamped cartridges were still around into the 1970's...

I have had plenty of these in the past. Every cased percussion pistol had a place for these cap boxes. They date from the 1840's through 2015. Yes you can buy fakes ones today to put in a cased pistol set. They look as old as the hills but be made last year.
Some are filled with pieces of scrap metal and sealed. They will rattle like the real ones with percussion caps inside.
I have had Ely of London along with domestic ones. Some are real and original. I put little or no value to them. Soldiers were issued leather percussion cap boxes that were worn on the belt or shoulder strap. They are fleece lined with a strap and brass fastener. These have a value. Now the tins are really not sold as fakes to fool they are sold just like combustible pistol cartridges the look good in a cased pistol set. Many times I have come across original Colt Presentation Pistol boxes and put a nice engraved Colt in the box, add a flask, percussion tins, and accessories
