NF Civil War bookstores

Non-Fiction
Here is just a small list of what I found by typing "Civil War Bookstores" in my browser's search box.

List of bookstores specializing in the Civil War from Biblio: https://www.biblio.com/bookstores/civil-war/558

List of bookstores specializing in the American Civil War from Biblio: https://www.biblio.com/bookstores/american-civil-war/716

Books of Valor on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_ss...87018&store_name=BOOKS-OF-VALOR&_pgn=11&rt=nc

Barnes & Noble's list of books for Confederate States of America - General & Miscellaneous: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/b/bo...america-general-miscellaneous/_/N-29Z8q8Z11ox

Abraham Lincoln Book Shop in Chicago: https://alincolnbookshop.com/ I would love to go to this shop at some point. It is northwest of my train station in the city, and I'm not sure it is walkable from there, although I don't think the neighborhood would be a particular problem. It is a long-established and well-known shop. See "About the Shop" under "Info" toward the top right of the page. Prices range from "normal" to "way above my pay grade." There are collectables, not just books. Hover over "Shop" toward the top middle of the page to see specific categories of items.

Many bookstores come up on my search list, but it would be better if a local could tell us about them rather than just have me list them. How about it folks? Where do you go in your area when you're looking for a special Civil War book? It hasn't come down to just Amazon and the Friends of the Library sale (as attractive as that is :D) has it?

Is there a listing somewhere of bookstores specializing in the Civil War? I'm driving from New York State to Florida in January and would love to visit some.

Definitely hit Broadfoot's location in Wendell, NC. Easy diversion off of 95, the warehouse is loaded with thousands of used book at huge discount prices. I have seen countless book dealers buying books there. I personally have bought a large amount of books there over the years. Ms Jean runs it and is the nicest lady in North Carolina. Periodically Tom Broadfoot runs sales that are catered with Brunswick Stew, hush puppies and sweet tea and a few other food items. The store is transitioning to a new owner Kent Schweikert who runs Books of Valor on eBay. Check out their hours on Broadfoots website. You hit this and any other civil war bookstore does not compare. Either for the sheer volume of books or the amazing prices!

@MarylandLine beat me to it and I agree 100%. I have been doing business with Tom Broadfoot for decades. I am confident they would open the store by appointment to accommodate your itinerary if necessary. Ring Jean up and ask her to send you their current newsletter/listings

Let me tell you one little story. I had been buying Tom's books in a specific interest of mine off and on for a couple of years. I got a surprise call from him. He was buying a library of books dedicated to this area and asked if I would be interested in them in bulk. He basically trans-shipped the entire lot to me for a small markup. That is the kind of personalized service you will receive.

Yep, Tom is the salt of the earth. Most of his books are for sale 30%-50% off what you'd pay a book dealer. He has a room with extremely rare and valuable titles for the not so faint of heart or they have deep pockets. 😁

Some of my favorite Civil War Bookstores are in Gettysburg, Pa.
For the Historian – 42 York St
Greystone's American History Store – 461 Baltimore St
Gettysburg National Military Park - Visitor Center - 1195 Baltimore Pike
Also, many of the Civil War National Battlefield Parks Visitor Centers have a good selection of books and videos.
I'd be interested in those that you chose to visit.

I'll second the above recommendation for a stop in Gettysburg if your travels take you near there. If you're coming down Rt. 15 from upstate NY you'll go right past. The visitors center gift shop has a very large book selection along with the offerings of many of the shops in town. And a lap around the battlefield is always a worthy diversion.

You have got to go! The majority of their inventory isn't on their website. Bjorn, Daniel and Sylvia are some of the friendliest people I've met and all are extremely knowledgeable.

If you're coming through Middle Tennessee on your trip south... I haven't been in years (prior to their move) but you might want to try Elder's Books in Nashville if your routing allows: https://www.eldersbookstore.com/ Also, in the area... Landmark Booksellers in Franklin, TN https://www.landmarkbooksellers.com/ Landmark is a block from the town square and close to the Carter House, Lotz House and everything related to the Battle of Franklin. Neither of these stores is "just" Civil War, but both have or have had a lot of great historic books, buys, first and limited editions, etc.

Elder's is absolutely awesome. Landmark is also a nice little bookshop. You can't go wrong with either.

Most Civil War books I have seen in one store is John R. King Book store in down town Detroit. Perhaps 3,000 Civil War books. They claim they have over one million books in the store and they might be underestimating. Fair prices but it is in an old warehouse so not fancy.

I may be jumping in here late, but if your looking for a couple cool corners to visit with a good selection of CW books, Riverby Books on Caroline Street in Fredericksburg had a big used section of CW books at one time. I found a complete set old school 1st pub edition of Lee's Lieutenants here, mint, very an awesome price and I found a signed James 'Bud' Robertson Virginia CW book also. They have a website.
There is also Baine's Books and Coffee in Appomattox on Main Street, directly across from the old train station. I believe the owner had purchased the last surviving sets of the Virginia Regimental Series that sat in an old warehouse from H.E.H. Publishing. They used to have a decent amount of Virginia Regimental Series books left. They have a link referencing on their website. You can look them up. Two cool spots for those looking for old gems to add to your personal libraries. Good Luck
