What surprises me is the description of how clean and well-run the Confederate hospitals were, despite the perception of a government and army lacking in everything at the end.

Yes it does seem to be that way. I was surprised too. Looks like if JD had of stayed around, he might have been hung...by his own people!! Sure is good reading for sure.
