For infantry what would be the most common color found on CS uniforms? I would say blue, but you see a lot of guys at reenactments with black as well. For a Virginia regiment which is correct?

The CS Army regulations call for branch of service color chevrons.

the facing color for the infantry was to be light blue...

But considering the Confederate Army did not supply the regulation uniform, but instead cheap gray jackets, usually without any facings or trim, and the non-commissioned officers had to sew on their own insignias, or the soldier procured clothing from home, or from a tailor, etc., they seem to have done so in many cases without much concern for the color, etc., any more than the jacket's themselves were made of a single type or shade of cloth.

Here's the chevrons of 1st Sgt. Lester of Co. C, 10th Georgia volunteer infantry, died at Richmond in March, 1863:

Here's another example, with the same fabric used to face the cuffs and make the chevrons...

In many cases, evidently especially in the western theatre, many N.C.O.s did not bother about the chevrons at all.

Black was an easier color material to procure so it appears on several original jackets for chevrons and trim. It was also the color of infantry for Georgia State Troops early on. Most early war Georgia state garments were trimmed in black
