It has taken me all 30 years of my digging CW relics to finally complete one side of the board. In my eyes, I see 2 Castles, 2 Knights helmets, 2 Bishops, Queens crown and King, along with variants of pawns. All these carved bullets I dug out of winter camps from Fredericksburg to Brandy Station, along with many other game pieces, including 6 pieces for the other side of the board. Maybe one day it will be a complete set, Lord willing I get many more years of digging.

I once played chess with a guy who should have been a pickpocket or a magician. He would perform "battlefield promotions" by slipping a captured queen or took back on the board through sleight-of-hand.

This is a great set, and it reminds us that not all of the civil war was spent marching, riding, or in the line. The only letter I am aware of from my GGG grandfather was written from winter quarters in Stevensburg just before the Dahlgren raid.

I'm pretty sure it's the rabbit. The armored rabbit that fought on horseback, not the one with the Holy Handgrenade.
