During the Civil War Willam Holand Thomas formed a Cherokee Zouaves (the Junaluska Zouaves) unit in North Carolinia. It had about 200 Cherokee in a home guard type of unit. Thomas went on to form Thomas's Legion of Indians and Highlanders with many of the 2,800 men being Cherokees. Did the Junaluska Zouaves wear a Zouave uniform?

I believe it was just a nickname for companies A & B. Local lore here in in east Tennessee says when their movements brought them into this area, they'd purposefully strip down to loincloth and warpaint to scare the bejesus out of the local home-grown Yankees.

Thomas's Legion is credited by some as being the last Confederate unit east of the Mississippi River to surender. I have not verified this claim.
